****ADD HEADING****
I was talking with a native South African not that long ago, and she had never heard of Kenton-on-Sea – that’s a good thing! Although it is a little holiday town for locals, a lot of travelers don’t know about it. Water flows on 3 sides of the town – flanked by the Bushman’s and Kariega Rivers and the warm Indian Ocean along the coast. Hop on a river boat trip for relaxation and some fantastic birding. As great as the rivers are, here’s the best part of Kenton-on-Sea – the beaches! The Eastern Cape’s blue flag beaches of Kariega Beach and Middle Beach are great, but it’s the hidden gem of Shelley Beach that is the most stunning. Picture a secluded cove surrounded by rugged sea cliffs where you can snorkel in tidal pools at low tide, without the big crowds. It does take a little effort to get there – a 20 minute hike among sand dunes – but it’s worth it!
While in Kenton-on-Sea, enjoy the beaches, rock pools and sand dunes. Go horseback riding on the beach. Throw in some fun little shops full of character, and you’ve got a great place to spend part of your holiday.
Tip
- The walk/hike to Shelley Beach begins at Middle Beach or the Bushman's River mouth parking lot. The beach has lots of seashells, hence the name, so bring shoes to protect your feet!
